A Transformative Experience for Future Scientists
On a recent educational visit to the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) in Lahore, students from Saint Mary’s College of Medical & Advance Studies, specializing in Biotechnology and Biochemistry, were afforded a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of science and law enforcement. This visit not only enhanced their understanding of forensic science but also inspired them to consider the vital role they can play in the criminal justice system.
Understanding the Role of PFSA | Achievements and Impact
Since its establishment in 2011, the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) has processed a total of 924,372 cases, successfully reporting on 897,569 of them by the end of 2022, according to the PFSA Annual Performance Report 2022. In 2022 alone, PFSA received 128,601 cases and reported on 117,670, maintaining a backlog rate of approximately 1.68% by the end of the year. PFSA's commitment to timely case resolution and provision of accurate forensic analysis has made it an indispensable resource for law enforcement agencies in Punjab, reinforcing its critical role in the criminal justice system.
Hands-On Learning
During the visit, students were guided through various departments within the PFSA, where they observed forensic scientists at work. They learned about the meticulous processes involved in evidence collection, analysis, and the application of forensic science in real-world scenarios. The agency’s commitment to maintaining high standards, as evidenced by its ISO 17025 accreditation, was particularly impressive. This dedication to quality reassured the students that their future careers in science could significantly impact society.
A Beacon of Hope
The establishment of the PFSA has been a game-changer for Punjab's criminal justice landscape. By integrating forensic services and promoting collaboration among law enforcement agencies, PFSA has minimised the chances of evidence mishandling and contamination.
The Importance of Knowledge Sharing
One of the key takeaways from the visit was the emphasis on knowledge sharing at PFSA. The agency conducts workshops and seminars for law enforcement personnel, ensuring that all stakeholders are well-equipped to handle evidence and utilize forensic science effectively. The students recognized the potential for their skills in biotechnology and biochemistry to contribute to this ongoing mission of enhancing forensic practices.
Inspiring Future Careers
The visit also served to inspire students about potential career paths within forensic science. With the increasing demand for skilled professionals in this field, graduates from Saint Mary’s College can pursue various roles, including forensic analysts, crime scene investigators, and laboratory technicians. The insights gained during the visit will undoubtedly motivate students to explore these opportunities further, integrating their scientific knowledge with practical applications in law enforcement.
Visitation
Students from Saint Mary’s College, guided by Ms. Madiha Nosheen (Dean) and Mr. Ihthsham Ali (Director of the Internship & Outreach Program), gained invaluable insights into forensic science and its applications in the criminal justice system.
The educational tour of the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) was more than just a Tutorial Visitation; it was a transformative experience that highlighted the essential connection between science and justice. Special thanks are due to the Director General of PFSA and Education Coordinator Ms. Fozia for providing this opportunity. This visit not only broadened their horizons but also ignited a passion for forensic science, equipping them to contribute to the evolving landscape of this field in Pakistan.
